Building an inclusive design community
I’ve been building Incubed which is a design-focused technology group at San Francisco State University. I’ve worn multiple hats at this club, starting from a mentee to leading a design team of 4 to reach our design goals for the club.
Introduction
Incubed aims to build a community of design-focused entrepreneurs at San Francisco State University by teaching people about design and entrepreneurship. We have developed a strong network of designers and founders who work in and around the valley and invite them to hold workshops for students.
Hackathon
In 2018 the club hosted SF’s first collegiate hackathon, SF Hacks 2018 and I worked on the brand identity for the hackathon.
Why are student hackathons important?
Hackathons are how I was introduced to building cool things. Student hackathons are an important stepping stone for a lot of students who don’t have access to company hackathons or developer exclusive events. Moreover, company-sponsored hackathons have a very narrow spectrum of projects which usually involve using the company’s API/dev tools. Collegiate hackathons are neutral in nature and foster a learning environment for students.
